DRUMMERS
|
Terry Williams - Rockpile
The best thing about Terry Williams' drumming
is that he always sounds like he's having
the most fun in the band at any given moment.
He's never plays too busy, yet seems to never
turn down an opportunity to throw a little
something special into the margins. |
Jimmy Marinos - The Romantics
I have heard from very non-reliable sources
that Jimmy Marinos was the inspiration for
the Muppets show character "Animal."
It's easy to see and hear why. He was the
first drummer I ever saw who was unquestionably
the star of a bands live show. And it wasn't
because of his singing or any sort of virtuosity
- it was due to sheer high energy bashing.
Just the way I like it! |
Mike Zelenko - Material Issue
When presented with extremely simple songs,
I think the normal inclination for a drummer
is to try to get fancy and toss in a few
complexities to balance things out. Not Mike.
When presented with the classic 3 chord boy/girl
power pop songs of Jim Ellison he responded
non-intuitively by playing harder and even
simpler. He definitely made the right choice
because somehow it worked like a charm. |
Tommy Ramone - Ramones
This could have just as easily been Marky
Ramone, and maybe it should be based on his
pre-Ramones contributions like "Blank
Generation." But I'm going with Tommy
because he basically invented the "so
stupid it's brilliant" style that served
the Ramones (and continues to serve the many
bands they influenced) so well for so long. |

Max Weinberg - E Street Band/Max Weinberg
7
The snob in me does not want to list a TV
band as a credit for one of my favorite drummers.
But the truth is it wasn't until Max Weinberg
started playing every night on Conan O'Brien's
"Late Night" with the Max Weinberg
7 that I sat up and took notice of him. Especially
in the earlier days of the show, he dominated
the band through sheer force of will and
backbeat. And he never even breaks a sweat
while doing it! Of course after having my
interest piqued I went back and gave a closer
listen to his work with Springsteen and realized
how good he was without ever stealing the
spotlight away from Bruce. Bonus points for
having, in my opinion, superb comic timing
that nearly matches the steady tempos he
provides behind the kit. |
